BrakeObserver - System solution from HEAD acoustics for an automatic detection of brake noise based on psychoacoustical methods
High-frequency noise, in particular, is a cause of annoyance and of high warranty costs for car manufacturers. Therefore, the elimination of brake squeals are of increasing importance in the development of new brake systems.
As disturbing brake noise usually only appears on a irregular basis, a detection system needs to dispose of intelligent algorithms for noise detection which initiate a signal recording only for real brake noise though take all audible squeals into consideration.

With BrakeObserver HEAD acoustics GmbH developed a mobile measurement system consisting of hardware and software for recording, detection and subjective evaluation of brake noise which is capable to distinguish disturbing brake noise from normal operation noise.
The BrakeObserver software is based on the principle of pattern recognition of human hearing (patented Relative Approach Algorithm). It reacts to quickly changing temporal and spectral structures of signals, which change quickly
The interface of the software is freely customizable and, visualization included, can be set quickly and reliably to the driver's different requirements. The various trigger options also feature the power of performance and adaptation during use. Besides the automatic brake noise detection including "off-brake noise", the sound recording can also be triggered manually or through other signals, such as brake pressure or brake pedal position.
Besides the eight audio channels the front end provides inputs for sensors, e.g. for recording brake and environment temperature, brake pressure, humidity, vehicle acceleration and RPM. In addition, CAN signals can be fed into the measurement system.
